FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Rocinha Favela Tour safe?

Yes, Rocinha is safe to visit! Our guides were born and raised in Rocinha and understand exactly where, when, and how to move through the community safely. We follow approved routes, avoid restricted areas, and monitor conditions daily. These paths are regularly used for tourism and local activities. Before starting, you’ll receive a clear safety and etiquette briefing, including when and where you can take photos, to ensure you feel confident and comfortable from beginning to end.

It’s possible that you may see community members who are part of the local security structure, as well as signs of drug activity. This is part of everyday life in many favelas, including Rocinha. These individuals focus on their own routines and do not interact with visitors.

Most visitors are surprised by how calm, friendly, and welcoming the community feels, despite these realities. Seeing this side of favela life can offer a deeper, more honest understanding of the neighbourhood’s social complexity, all while staying safe under the guidance of experienced locals. Your safety remains our highest priority.

Can I bring donations or gifts?

Your generosity is greatly appreciated! While there are many meaningful ways to support residents, donations should be coordinated to ensure they are appropriate and truly beneficial. If you’d like to give money or gifts, please contact us beforehand so we can advise you on the most responsible and effective way to help.
